Words at the Threshold:
The Linguistic Patterns and Themes of Final Words
with Lisa Smartt, MA
What do our final words tell us about life, death, and the afterlife? A person’s last words can be mysterious, confusing, or powerfully meaningful. Author and linguist Lisa Smartt shares what she has learned in the first four years of her research through The Final Words Project. She will discuss the patterns and themes she discovered and how the data points to a transcendent world beyond our own. She will also offer practical guidance for more meaningful communication with loved ones who are at the end of life.
Alchemical Language:
The Language of the Threshold and of Transformation
with Lisa Smartt, MA
While most of us think of language as being a tool of our analytic mind, language also has the capacity to awaken consciousness and connect us with the divine. Incantations, hypnotic inductions, prayers, spells, chants, koans and speaking in tongues all have demonstrated the capacity of language to shift consciousness.
This experiential workshop will invite you to explore alchemical language—that is the language of transformation and altered consciousness. Remarkably, the very principles of alchemical language that we see in poets, mystics, healers and shamans, are the very patterns we find in the language of the dying and in the accounts of those who have had near-death experiences. Discover the principles of alchemical language and how they can deepen your communication with the dying, the living and all that is sacred in you.
Staring through the Keyhole:
What Language Reveals About Consciousness
with Lisa Smartt, MA and Raymond Moody, MD, PhD
The iconic phrase “In the beginning was the Word” resonates strongly when we look at the importance of language in the creation of human life and culture. It is as if words literally breathe us into existence and give us tools to make meaning of experience. Patterns of language shift with our experience of social class, culture, gender identity, and states of consciousness.
Our inquiry into language beings with a survey of theories of language from ancient times through Wittgenstein and Austin and then to contemporary analysis of language through the lens of cognitive and psycholinguistics. The course ends with an examination into the language of the near-death experience and final words and what they might reveal about the existence of life after death. Staring through the “keyhole of language,” we will gain greater insight into the mystery of human consciousness.
